How international dialing works

Every international call has the same three parts, dialed in this order:

  1. Exit code of the country you call from, for example 011 in the US or 00 in the UK. On a mobile, + replaces it.
  2. Country code of the country you call, for example 44 for the UK or 91 for India.
  3. Local number, including the area code, without the leading 0 that is used for domestic calls.

Example: to call the London number 020 7946 0958 from New York, dial 011 44 20 7946 0958. From a mobile, dial +44 20 7946 0958.

Common mistakes

  • Keeping the leading 0. 011 44 020… fails. Dial 011 44 20… instead.
  • Using your home exit code abroad. The exit code depends on where you are now, not where your phone is from. The + avoids this.
  • Adding 011 between the US and Canada. They share +1, so you dial 1 and the 10-digit number.
  • Calling toll-free numbers from abroad. Most 800 numbers do not work from outside their country. Read our guide to calling US toll-free numbers from abroad.

Frequently asked questions

How do I dial an international number?

Dial the exit code of the country you are in, then the country code of the country you call, then the local number without its leading 0. From the US to a London landline, that is 011 44 20 7946 0958. From a mobile phone, you can dial + in place of the exit code: +44 20 7946 0958.

What is an exit code?

The exit code (also called the international access code or IDD prefix) tells your phone network that the next digits are a country code. It is 011 in the US and Canada, 00 in most of Europe, Africa and Asia, and 0011 in Australia.

What does the + mean in a phone number?

The + stands for the exit code of whatever country you are in. On a mobile phone, press and hold 0 to type +. A number written as +44 20 7946 0958 works from any country, so it is the safest way to save international contacts.

Do I drop the 0 when I call abroad?

Usually yes. Most countries add a 0 (the trunk prefix) in front of numbers for calls inside the country. Leave it out after the country code. Italy, San Marino and Vatican City are exceptions, where the 0 stays. The calculator handles this for you.

How do I call the US or Canada from abroad?

Dial your exit code, then 1, then the 10-digit number. From the UK that is 00 1 212 555 0123. Between the US, Canada and the Caribbean, which all share +1, you dial only 1 and the 10-digit number.

Why does my international call not connect?

The most common causes are a missing exit code, a leading 0 that should be dropped, or a phone plan that blocks international calls. Some carriers also charge a high per-minute rate or need you to turn on international calling first.

Can I call an international number without an international plan?

Yes. Webbphone lets you call mobiles and landlines in 230+ countries from your browser, with no app, no SIM card and no subscription. You pay per minute from prepaid credit.
