How to Call a US Toll-Free (1-800) Number From Abroad
US 800, 888 and 877 numbers often do not connect from outside the US and Canada. Here is how to reach them from any country, from your browser.
Short answer
US toll-free numbers (800, 833, 844, 855, 866, 877, 888) usually connect only from inside the US and Canada. To reach one from abroad, place the call through a service that dials from inside the US. With Webbphone you open the dialer in your browser, enter +1 and the 10-digit number, and pay per minute from prepaid credit.
Why 1-800 numbers fail from abroad
A toll-free number moves the cost of the call from the caller to the company. The company pays for calls that come from the areas it chose, and that is usually the US and Canada only. Calls from a foreign mobile or landline then often do not connect at all. You may hear an error message, a fast busy tone, or silence.
This is a problem when you live or travel abroad and the only number on a website is a toll-free one: airlines, banks, insurance companies, phone carriers, government services and online shops often publish only an 800 number.
Three ways to reach a US toll-free number from another country
1. Call from your browser with a US-routed service
Webbphone places your call from inside the US, so the toll-free network accepts it. You do not need a US phone number, a US SIM card or an app.
- Sign in with Google or your email address.
- Add credit from $5. New accounts get one free call of up to 1 minute on most destinations.
- Open the dialer, enter +1 and the 10-digit number, in the form +1 800 XXX XXXX.
- Check the per-minute rate in the dialer, then press call. Use the keypad for menu options.
2. Look for the company’s international number
Many companies list a normal, non-toll-free number for callers abroad. Look for “calling from outside the US” on the contact page, or on the back of your bank card. It is a regular US number, so you can call it from any phone or from Webbphone. For example, the IRS tells taxpayers abroad to call +1 267 941 1000 instead of its 800 numbers (see our guide to calling the IRS, HMRC and CRA from abroad).
3. Use chat, email or a callback
Some companies offer live chat or a callback service. This works when the company can call a foreign number, which many US support lines cannot do.
Tips for long calls on hold
- Use a headset and stable Wi-Fi. Browser calls sound best on a steady connection.
- Keep the tab open. Closing the browser tab ends the call.
- Know the cost of waiting. Hold time is billed like talk time. A call can last up to 4 hours.
- Have your details ready. Account numbers, date of birth and the last digits of your card, for the phone menu.
What about toll-free numbers in other countries?
Toll-free numbers in other countries, such as 0800 numbers in the UK, often also accept only domestic callers. If a toll-free call fails, look for the company’s geographic number and call that from the country rate page.

Can I call a 1-800 number from outside the US?
Often not from a normal foreign phone. US toll-free numbers generally work only inside the US, Canada and some US territories, so the call fails or is not connected. You can reach them from abroad with a service that places the call from inside the US, such as Webbphone in your browser.
Which area codes are US toll-free numbers?
US and Canadian toll-free numbers start with 800, 833, 844, 855, 866, 877 or 888, after the country code +1.
Is calling a toll-free number from abroad free?
No. Toll-free means free for callers inside the US. With Webbphone you pay the per-minute rate that the dialer shows before you call, and that includes the time you wait on hold.
Can I press menu options like “press 1 for English”?
Yes. The Webbphone dialer has a keypad that sends tones during the call, so you can move through phone menus and enter account numbers.
What is the best alternative if the company has an international number?
Use it. Many US companies list a separate number for callers outside the US on their contact page or on the back of your card. You can call that number from Webbphone too, and you avoid the toll-free problem.
