Short answer

To make cheap international calls online without an app, open a browser calling service such as Webbphone, sign in with your email, add prepaid credit and dial the number with its country code. The other person answers on a normal phone. You pay only for the minutes you use, with no subscription and no roaming charges.

How browser calling works

Modern browsers can send voice over the internet with a technology called WebRTC. Webbphone uses it to carry your voice from the browser to our servers, and from there into the normal phone network of the country you call. For you, it is a phone keypad in a browser tab. For the person you call, it is a normal phone call.

What you need

  • A computer, tablet or phone with Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari.
  • A microphone, ideally a headset.
  • A stable internet connection, such as home Wi-Fi or good 4G.
  • A Webbphone account: an email address or a Google account. You do not need a phone number or a SIM card.

How to make your first call

  1. Sign in with Google or your email address.
  2. Try the free call: new accounts get one call of up to 1 minute on destinations under $0.10 per minute.
  3. Add credit from $5 on the billing page. Credit never expires.
  4. Open the dialer, enter the + sign, the country code and the number, and check the rate.
  5. Press call and allow microphone access.

What it costs

You pay a per-minute rate for the country and the type of number, mobile or landline. There is no subscription, no connection fee and no roaming charge. Calls are billed per minute. The rate for your exact number shows in the dialer before you call.

Who uses browser calling

  • Expats and families who call parents on a landline or an older mobile.
  • Travellers who need to call a bank, an airline or a hotel without roaming. See how to call your bank from abroad.
  • People abroad with paperwork at home, such as taxes. See how to call the IRS, HMRC or CRA from abroad.
  • Freelancers and small teams who call clients and suppliers from a laptop and want to show their own number as caller ID.

Tips for clear calls

  • Use a headset. Laptop speakers and microphones cause echo.
  • Stay close to your Wi-Fi router, or use a cable.
  • Pause large downloads and video streams during the call.
  • Keep the browser tab open until the call ends.

Frequently asked questions

How can I make international calls online for free?

Calls are free when both people use the same app, such as WhatsApp or FaceTime. Calls to a normal mobile or landline cost money, because the call must enter the phone network. New Webbphone accounts get one free call of up to 1 minute on most destinations to test the service.

Do I need to download anything to call from my browser?

No. Webbphone runs in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. Your browser asks for microphone access the first time you call.

Does the person I call need the internet?

No. They answer on their normal mobile or landline. Only you need an internet connection.

How much internet speed do I need for a browser call?

A voice call needs very little bandwidth, but it needs a stable connection. Normal home Wi-Fi or a good 4G connection is enough. Use a headset to avoid echo.
